A Duck in a Parking Lot

Ducks are a common sight in the parking lot of Community Bank/PJ's Coffee. I suppose the bayou-side location is convenient, so ducks meander freely. In my small city, it’s not unusual for traffic to halt as ducks cross parking lots and/or roads. I confess that I have nearly caused a few accidents myself, slowing down or completely stopping to let a single duck or duck family pass.

Now, about this duck I encountered in the parking lot—I call her Cajun Country's bravest. (I am also calling it a “her” because, in my opinion, she acts like someone’s mother.) While Cajuns are known for our adventurous culinary tastes, I’ve been told that these ducks aren't something anyone would eat. Yeah, alright. So, they aren't edible—not even to Cajuns? Okay. That seems totally legit. Anyway…

So, there she was, bold as brass. After emerging from the bayou side, she strutted across the lot with such poise, and I held my breath before the driver of a lifted pickup truck yielded to her. She navigated the accessible parking space confidently and gracefully before proceeding onto the sidewalk, perhaps in pursuit of stray crumbs from PJ’s crumpets.

Unfazed by the noisy and potentially dangerous world around her, she was a picture of serene confidence—untouched by the harshness that might have spooked a lesser creature. She didn't just walk; she owned her journey, embodying fearlessness in every step.

For a moment, I envied her. This duck had never tuned into CNN or FOX News, read or heard a story about a lifted truck that once flattened a duck, or been warned about the dangers of carb consumption. She lives in her reality, where she can be fearless and magnificent without concern for the world around her. She’s just sharing a road with fellow travelers and enjoying whatever life places in her path.

I’ll take a leaf out of her book. I will (continue to) avoid negativity or anything discouraging me from moving through my days without purpose. I will (continue to) engage the world with optimism and bravery—just like the duck in the parking lot, navigating life with unwavering confidence and grace. Who knew ducks could be so wise?
