Recently, my youngest son and I texted the following.

Me: Whatcha doing?

Him: Working out. What’s up?

Me: Nothing. Just wanted to peek in.

He didn’t ask me anything else, and I said nothing more.

In his infinite wisdom, he undoubtedly thought that my “Whatcha doing?” and “Just wanted to peek in.” meant that I (literally) wanted to know what he was doing at that exact moment, which explains his literal and concise response.

Seems logical. But...

The following is what those three sentences containing eight words really meant:

1.      I miss you so much.

2.      I love you more.

3.      Are you eating well?

4.      When I randomly wake up in the middle of the night, I pray for you and your brother.

5.      Are you excited about the future?

6.      Are you spending your free time with true friends?

7.      Are you reading your Bible?

8.      Are you being careful?

9.      I pray for you and your brother every day.

10.  Are YOU remembering to pray?

11.  I’m so proud of you.

12.  Has anyone hurt you? If yes, give me a name.

13.  I hope you feel how much you are loved.

But instead of texting all of the above, I just wrote the three sentences containing eight words. (Sigh.)

Sure, he's been told all those things countless times before, but NEVER all at once and NEVER in ONE TEXT! At least not that I can recall.
