The Company We Keep

This Christmas, I’ve found myself immersed in a season of hope and generosity, surrounded by people who remind me of what it means to be the hands and feet of God.

I’m part of a small group working to fulfill holiday wishes for about two hundred children. The initiative, primarily funded by an organization undertaking this mission annually, has blossomed into something extraordinary. Donations of time, money, and love have poured in, snowballing into an effort that feels like witnessing God’s work unfold before my eyes.

And the event itself? It’s going to be spectacular.

But this isn’t an article about the event. This is about the people—the company I’ve been blessed to keep during this season of giving.

First, there’s the master organizer, a woman whose to-do lists could rival Santa’s. Her heart may be the size of Wisconsin, and her sharp eye for detail and clear vision keep everything running smoothly.

Then there’s the Pastor and his wife, who carry themselves with a quiet grace that radiates faith, kindness, and a love that seems to ripple outward to everyone they encounter. But don’t let their serene demeanor fool you—they’ve got a stash of dad jokes and a silly streak that sneaks out at just the right moments, reminding us that joy and laughter are holy, too.

Countless other volunteers—teenagers eager to help, church staff working tirelessly, and others who saw a need and jumped in without hesitation and worked hours AND HOURS without complaint.

And then there are the female inmates—yes, inmates—who became expert gift wrappers, transforming simple boxes into treasures. Their joy at stepping outside the prison walls for a few hours was contagious. Their smiles, as dazzling as the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, have reminded all of us to savor even the simplest moments of freedom and connection.

Working alongside these people has been like watching the creation of an intricate dance, each person offering their own steps—small but vital—to create something breathtaking. Everyone’s clearly defined purpose and generosity brought to mind something my dad used to tell me:

“You are who you hang with, so choose wisely.”

Looking around, I realize I’ve chosen to surround myself with givers and encouragers. Conversations are filled with hope and excitement, revolving around the children we’re serving and the joy we hope to bring them. There’s no gossip, no complaints, just joy, laughter, unity, and a purpose so pure it’s like a balm for the soul.

And today—the BIG day—is here. I’ll step into it with a heart full of gratitude, knowing that you don't just feel His presence when you walk beside people who follow God’s lead. You see it, you hear it, and if you’re paying attention, you realize it’s already been working through you all along.

I hope your circle is filled with encouragers, givers, and people who are purpose-driven and faith-filled!
