(If it ain't written, it ain't real.)

A very small sample of "life's treasures."
A very small sample of "life's treasures."

My favorite things are not actual “things.” My most cherished possessions include letters and cards from my family, friends, and virtual strangers who have graciously supported my dreams.

I have an elevated appreciation for the written word. “If it ain’t written, it ain’t real” are the “eloquent” words I live by. In my opinion, kind words should be written so that there’s physical proof of goodness. Sadly, and too often, unkind words seem to play in a perpetual loop. I have no control over that, but I do control how I live. I am one of those people who still buys stationery and sends handwritten notes to encourage or thank people for their awesomeness.

I am (also) a sentimental fool, and I save every card or letter I receive, especially the ones with a personal note. These “treasures” go into my fireproof file and are among the few things I take during hurricane evacuations because these notes are as valuable as my jewelry and important documents.

Does anyone in your life need to be encouraged, thanked, or reminded they’re loved? If yes, what are you waiting for? Your kind words could be what gets them through a difficult time. Don’t worry about being grammatically correct or wordy; don’t let your “horrible handwriting” deter you either because that “mess” will only increase the value of your offering. Maybe your simple note will one day be housed among someone’s treasures.

Below are a few excerpts from some of my treasures. Needless to say, the notes from those no longer with me are heart-healing. Also, I’m sending a big “Thank You” to every person who has ever reached out to me in kindness. You may have never known how much your words meant to me, but hopefully, now, you do.

1.      Thank you for always being understanding and supportive of me. (From a friend.)

2.      I can only imagine how difficult these past few days have been with Colonel’s absence. (From my vet after losing my dog.)

3.      You made the right decision to prevent more pain and suffering. (From my vet after losing another dog.)

4.      You have always been there for me, and it's been a blessing to know that the strongest woman I have ever known has been in my corner from the beginning. (From my son.)

5.      … no matter how much time goes by without seeing each other, you’ll always be so very special to me. (From a friend.)

6.      Let’s get together for some wine soon! (From a friend.)

7.      Thank you for stepping up to serve your community! You’re going to do a great job! (From an acquaintance after I won an election.)

8.      As election day draws near, we want to wish you all the best and let you know that we’ll be pulling for you. (From a friend before an election.)

9.      Congrats on convincing 10,580 people to believe in you. (From a friend after I lost an election.)

10.  You make me proud every single day. (From my mom.)
